Las Vegas Marathon 2010

Hours ago the Strip was filled with rodeo fans, but early this morning, the cowboys were replaced with dozens of Elvises, brides, grooms and world-class athletes ready to run the The Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon.
Under clear skies with no wind and temperatures in the mid-40s, approximately 30,000 runners hit the start line around 7 a.m.
The later starting time allowed the runners to start in daylight and temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than last year's 6 a.m. start.
As in years past, the marathon is just as much of an event as a race. Las Vegas Metro Police could be seen parked, with lights flashing, in front of the Venetian where a number of newlyweds and couples stopped to say "I do" before continuing on the course. The wedding took place around 8:00 a.m., between miles two and three of the race.
On the competitive side, 24-year-old Scott Bauhs of Mammoth Lakes, CA won the half-marathon in a time of 1:02:38.26. Three-time Olympian Jen Rhines was the first woman to finish the half-marathon, in a time of 1:14:56.95.
The start line is in the northbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard, at the Dewey Street intersection.
The course heads downtown for the first six miles, hits a few side streets, then moves to the southbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard on the way to the finish line at Mandalay Bay. Half-marathoners go straight to the finish, while marathoners head west on Hacienda and wind around southwest Las Vegas before returning to the Strip for the finish.

Apple Cup 2010

The “Apple Cup” played since 1900, presented his name (changed to “Governor’s Trophy” in 1969) the state of Washington apple crop area. The Huskies loss rate can be beaten in a bowl. If this happens, Steve Sarkisian to sell recruits progress. 0 to 12 in 5 wins a big game Bowl in just two years, easily. However, if the Huskies lose to be stagnate. 0 to 12 in 5 wins to five wins and a disappointing winter. Apple Cup is very much a referendum on race Washington. He Jake Locker could be used as the quarterback who helped to be recognized in Washington from the bottom of the lowest moments in the history of the program and save the Huskies back for the playoffs for the first time since almost a decade. When Washington (05.06, 04.04 Pac-10) and Washington State (2-9, 1-7) in what is expected to reach as below freezing Saturday night in the Palouse, the Huskies in a game the end of the season that a game Ball for the first time since 2002, to drive.

Jake Locker's Last Stand

It all comes down to this for Washington senior Jake Locker. One last game, one last chance to finish what he started at UW. In the face of first-round money in the NFL Draft, Locker spurned the overtures, returning to Washington for his fifth, and final, year. The goal: a bowl game. The Huskies are one game away, with only the Washington State Cougars standing in the way.
Locker has seen his draft stock fall in 2010, leaving one to wonder if a return was worth it. Should the Huskies make a bowl, however, it will serve as vindication for the senior quarterback, giving him a chance to leave his mark on the program.
His fifth year hasn’t been easy, by any means. Plagued by nagging injuries, the worst of which came in the form of a broken rib, Locker has seen his accuracy fall coming-off a banner year in 2009. His completion percentage is down, to 56.1 percent from 58.2 percent, and his passing yardage is down, to 1983 yards from 2800 in 2009.
Playing behind a patchwork line, the Huskies’ signal-caller has taken an immense amount of heat from opposing defenses while absorbing punishing hits along the way. The results have been painful, both for Locker and fans of the Huskies. A bruised thigh earlier in the season limited his mobility while a broken rib made it nearly impossible to utilize Locker’s biggest weapon: his legs.
And yet, here we are. Two must-win games in the rear-view mirror and the Huskies are one game away. If Locker can lead the Huskies to one more victory, and a good bowl game to boot, his legend will grow. If not, the dream dies in Pullman today. Washington fans hope he has one more dose of magic in him.

Virgin launches iPad-only magazine called Project

Virgin Tycoon Richard Branson has launched what he says is the "first truly digital" magazine for Apple's iPad.
The publication, called Project, is a monthly style and culture magazine that will be sold through Apple's App store.
The publication comes head of an expected launch of a digital newspaper for the iPad called The Daily.
The newspaper is expected to be launched by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.
It is part of Mr Murdoch's continuing efforts to find a sustainable model for his newspaper empire, which has seen increased competition from free content on the internet.
In July, his Times newspaper began to charge customers to access its site, resulting in a 87% drop in readership online.
At the New York launch, Mr Branson dismissed suggestions he was engaged in a war with Murdoch.
"It's not a battle," he said. "It's all about choice, and a fair bit of competition doesn't hurt."
Project features video, sound and links to augment features on topics such as a new Jaguar car prototype and the film Tron: Legacy.
"On every page there will be links to expand the story," the editor-in-chief Anthony Noguera told the AFP news agency.
The magazine will cost £1.79 ($2.99), but Mr Noguera believes people will pay.
"It's a quality piece of editorial, so you have to pay for it," he said. "This is an expensive product to make."
However, reaction to the magazine has been muted. Digital media blog Paid content, for example, said it "frustrates with complexity".

Tech blog CNet said that "the articles themselves, as well as the messages in the souped-up advertisements for brands like Lexus and Panasonic, can come across as afterthoughts when there's so much audio-visual distraction" already on the iPad.

THE BEST ANDROID SMARTPHONES

Motorola Droid

For those who must have a physical keyboard, the Motorola Droid is definitely a phone to consider. Despite the fact that the phone has a slide out keyboard, the phone is still relatively thin; actually it is only marginally thicker than the iPhone 3G. The 5 megapixel camera and dual LED flash also allow the phone to take surprisingly good photos – considering that this is actually a phone.

While you have to save apps to the phone's internal memory (512MB ROM and 256MB RAM), a memory card will store up to a maximum of 32GB of photos, music, and other content.

Other Features: 5MP camera, LED flash, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack

Dimensions: 4.56” x 2.36” x 0.54”

Weight: 5.96 ounces

Display: 3.7”

Starting Price: $149 with a 2 year contract from Verizon

HTC Evo 4G

Sprint has the distinction of bringing the first 4G smart phone to the US in the form of the Evo 4G. The most noticeable feature of the Evo 4G is its generous 4.3-inch display. While the extra wide screen makes it a joy to watch videos on, it does tend to make the phone uncomfortable to grasp and use for all but those with large hands. The phone also takes a battery life penalty for having such a large and vibrant display.Regardless, the phone is one of the most feature-rich smartphone devices on the market with performance to back it up, thanks to the 1Ghz Snapdragon processor that makes the user experience quite snappy. One of the biggest selling points of this phone is the 4G service that it supports. You won’t be able to get the service in every area at this time, but if you do, you'll get speeds that are on average 10x faster than current 3G speeds.

Other Features: HDMI ports, 3.5mm head jack port, Wi-Fi

Dimensions: 4.8” x 2.6” x 0.5”

Weight: 6 ounces

Display: 4.3”

Starting Price: $199 with a contract from Sprint

HTC Droid Incredible

Like the Evo 4G, the Droid Incredible has a 1Ghz processor. While the Incredible has a smaller touch screen, measuring 3.7-inches, it does afford a better battery life than the Evo 4G. The phone’s user experience is enhanced by the HTC Sense interface that runs on Android 2.1.The Droid Incredible is a feature-rich phone that also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and runs on Verizon’s fast 3G network. Like many of the best Android phones we highlight here, the Droid Incredible has fabulous multimedia and multi-tasking capabilities that are sure to please technophiles. One standout feature of this phone is its contoured back plate, which you either love or hate.

Other Features: 8MP camera, 8GB internal memory, 3.5mm headphone jack

Dimensions: 4.63” x 2.3” x 0.47”

Weight: 4.59 ounces.

Display: 3.7”

Starting Price: $199 with a contract from Verizon

Nexus One

This Google Android phone has a fast processor, vibrant display and a dual microphone to improve the audio quality on calls. One of the nice features of the Nexus One is its second microphone that monitors background noise, makes adjustments to speaker volume, and works some other magic to improve the audio quality even when you are operating the phone in a noisy room. The phone has a gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED display that handles 16.7 million colors at an 800 x 480-pixel resolution.

Currently, the phone is sold exclusive by Google, who offers the device for either $179 with a two-year T-mobile contract or $529 without a contract. What is remarkable is that both versions come unlocked, so it will work on the GSM carrier of your choice.

Other Features: 5MP camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, trackball

Dimensions: 4.56” x 2.36” x 0.47”

Weight: 4.58 ounces

Display: 3.7" AMOLED

Starting Price: $179 with a contract from T-Mobile

Motorola Cliq

Like the Motorola Droid, the Cliq includes a physical keyboard, but this keyboard is much better. The keys on the keyboard make it possible to dial and text by touch. The Cliq also uses Motorola Blur, which allows you to access all contacts, email accounts and social media accounts in one place as well as customize the five home screens using widgets.

Other Features: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 5MP camera, GPS, Micro USB, geo-tagging

Dimensions: 2.3” x 0.6” x 4.5”

Weight: 5.7 ounces

Display: 3.1”

Starting Price: $149 with a contract from T-Mobile
